Abusive/innapropriate? Report this post.

Hey guys,

Pretty new to PKR, registered an account ages ago but the software wouldnt work on my old PC so had to stick with another online casino in 2D!

Anyway, I know the basics but I'm still not very good, can anyone recommend a good book that touches on the basics but has more advanced stuff in it? really want to get good at the game

Cheers

Hey, I have been devouring books since I started playing and I will recommend the following:

D.Negreanu: Hold 'Em Wisdom For all players.
(This is a short book written in really nice bite size pieces. It is pretty basic advice which may well be just what you need. You can read it in maybe a day or two for a quick primer)

The best book I have read which is still quite basic is Gus Hansen's "Every Hand Revealed". It is very well written and presents all the arguments very clearly. Unlike other books which may well tell you "how to play AA or KK" in this book you get to see how he plays all sorts of hands, the AA's, the AJo the 55, the 92o, and see how he reacts to missing the flop and bet sizing etc. Real life examples that I have found to be so much more educational than generic "rules" to play poker.

A lot of people like Harrington's books.
I'm not one of them - but I'm in the minority I think, so you might want to check them out.

Good luck to you,
Lady

IneedUrChips, 15/10/2009 Hehe, just outta bed ,you made me laugh with your wit.
Ok so he's a tournament player i guess, not much into tournaments myself but one book that did impress me alot was 'winning poker tournaments, one hand at a time' by pearljammer and co.
These guys that wrote it are some of the biggest winners online in todays modern game and they give you actual hand history on various hands and situations they encounter on a daliy basis.
Amust read for any beginner and serious tournament poker player.

For once i was actually serious Happy

I checked his profile, and he's got no record of tournaments. So it was a genuine question Happy

I have to say "Kill Everyone" is a very good book, also has a good indepth ring-game section. Its prolly a more level 2 book, so if u had the 'basics' as u claim, that one might be good Happy

Haha i bought "Collins: Need to know poker" the other day from one of those book clearance stores for £1, its pretty detailed actually.

To be honest i haven't found much help in poker books though, i find they try to cover too much/are outdated (play styles change throughout the years) or are simply a collection of boring mathematical and percentage calculations... great if your a pro... but most of us aren't

I'm of the firm opinion that to improve at the lower levels all you have to do is listen to some tips from the pro's and get in plenty of practice, find your play style and more or less stick to it.

this site was extremely useful for me, the pkr podcasts were full of good tips (although i can't find em anymore)

the commentary on pkr tv is very good as well and will get you thinking about how to play different hands in certain positions..

I agree with this, I read Hansens book first and am reading Negreanu now and it seems very good so far (half way through) so well worth a look

havent read to many books.

tournaments: best book by far is gus hansens every hand revealed.

another book that i liked is: tournament poker for advanced players by sklansky.

those are better than harringtons books and super system imo.

Newbie here.... I've read (no laughing now) Poker 4 Dummies and that was pretty interesting..

But I've been reading a lot of the online helps and using poker simulation software and to learn the game. Anyone got any opinions on that approach?

not sure if its bin mentioned or not but ive heard great things about 'winning poker tournaments one hand at a time' which is a new book written by pearljammer and co. def my next read and it shud apply directly to todays online game which imo is pretty rare

oh and ffs NEVER buy random poker books cos they r cheap. 95% of poker books are absolute shite and fuk up any chance of becoming a winning player

If you know the basics then imo your better off reading the Harrington range (vol I II and III) before moving onto Every Hand Revealed. Generally the biggest leaks of inexperienced or poor (sorry Sad) players is positional play and reading ranges and Harringtons is the best and quickest route to plugging these. Once you have got this sorted you should then be able to take onboard a lot of the information in Gus' book.

Anything by Phil H is crap and anyone who recommends Super Systems aint read anything else.

The Poker Mindset - Ian Taylor

Great Book talks about things that effect ur mindset
ie tilt loosing big pots and helps you control your thought process, not neccesarly a how to poker book but a great book because of it.

The Theory of Poker - David Sklanksy

I'm near the end of reading it GREAT book totally changed my outlook on poker and people who turn pro and gambling in general
