Bet stack or all in

This is something I've been applying in my cash games. I don't know how well it works but I'm fairly sure it has an effect.

Suppose you're sitting on a 100BB buy-in and are playing a short stack with 45BB. You know you have his ass beaten by the river, there's a 40BB pot and want to get paid off. Now! The short stack is hesitant and has 25BB left, enough to fold with.
In this situation I make sure I don't bet his stack, but push all in. That way the pot appears in the middle as: 40BB (120BB)

This looks like a crapload of money, and I think this might be the little extra touch that sends some easy victims over the edge. Call it the illusion of pot odds if you will.

Hell, maybe this doesn't work at all and I just wasted your precious time.Wink I know some folks out there like to bet exact stacks or just alternate between the two, so maybe this helps a little bit.

Yeah, I think you're right, against fishy players at least. Although my thoughts on this come from a slightly different angle. I feel that betting their stack rather than all-in kind of sends a message "I want you all-in" so they are more likely to fold. This can be useful when in a multi-way pot. Betting the exact amount of the shorter stack seems to send a message to the other players that you want that person all-in and are therefore very strong so they're more likely to get out of your way.

I also think that betting half your opponent's remaining stack (or just over), thereby puttng the words "all in" on their raise button, causes their mouse pointer to gravitate towards it. For some it seems to be irresistible. This seems to work well when an all-in bet might appear a little excessive. Happy

I don't think it needs to be a level INUC, it's a reasonable point. Though, it only works against retards. If you swell the amount of chips in the middle (even if they can't all be won), it makes an odds call more likely than if you only bet their stack.

Of course, against a competent player who can understand that there's a difference between what he can win and what's in the middle, this doesn't work. Against 'tards, it can't hurt to do it. Even if they only stack off 1 in 1000 times, it's +EV (assuming that betting stack doesn't have any psychological catch which makes it more callable).
