Abusive/innapropriate? Report this post.

I am doing ok amassing chips up to cash places but am running into more experienced players who I am sure are bluffing and raising to push me off large pots.. Any poker books that you would reccommend that would improve my " killer instinct ".. I think i,m dropping my calling range as one might in heads-up situation and position raising etc.. over-raising in-order to see my position.. and obviously patience ... but i "feel" when i,m playing that a couple of players are fearless with betting and i am having trouble with these over aggressive players... I am learning still and do not have the patience to learn pot odds. equity etc.. Where do I go from here ?

hi there birdi67!!

i havent read many books myself, but one I have find very interesting and would suit your criteria is Gus Hanses, "Every hand revealed."

when it comes to later stage play and facing over aggressive players. here are some tips. when you have reach the money you will see who are willing to take risks to get a big stack and who are sitting back to climb the moneyladder. i would attack those passive players and stay away from the aggressive ones unless i have a big hand. but sooner or later you have to make a stand against these players and i would prefer to do it sooner rather then later. do it when you still have a big enough stack to damage them and to make them fold. lets say they 3bet you preflop for the third time and you have been folding before. if i have a decent hand i would just push all.in to tell them that my chips isnt up for grabs without a fight. if you do that once or twice they are more likely to stay away from you and focus on easier targets.

GL at the tables. and if I am one of those bullies, I always have the goods Wink

Hi Birdi, tbh there isn't really any books that I've read that can develop the killer instinct... the only tip on my opinion is to keep making those final tables and know when to change gears so that you dont become a target for the bullies.

Smilar to what kai said, most people will be glad to make the money and thats the difference between winning it and coming 4th or 5th... play smart, play position, play aggressive!!!

gl man, see ya at the felt.

Thankyou both for taking the time to advise.. Will try to take it on board . Seems to me that I will have to turn T.V off and pay more attention to the table manners of those playing especially if I have folded allready...am obviously not getting enough reads on other players.. and now I know to raise you all-in when you 3bet me Kai Wink.
Kev, ty too , tho I expect to bump into you more as Kingkai plays at stakes that i am aspiring to.. Happy

Reading a book is fine, but I don't think it will ever give you that killer instinct that you’re looking for only hours of tournament play will do that for you, (and maybe a bottle of your finest vodka I sometimes find will help give you that courage)!

Take notes on players starting hands constantly, even when you’re not in the hand and this will give you a strong idea as to who you can bully and become the aggressor yourself. Players who you see raising routinely with weak holdings are your target and 3-betting, shoving is the only way to go if you’re serious about winning the money.

Another alternative to books is PKR’s very own TV, there are so many final tables on show at the moment, it’s very easy to see which players can and cannot be pushed of a hand, it also gives you an idea as to how often premium hands are actually been dealt to players at a final table, therefore giving you a strong idea how often you should been raising, it might surprise you but I would have no problem raising 40% of my hands on a final table, so when that “rare” premium hand does come along and you find yourself having to fold one of your many raises to a 3-bet or a shove you should have amassed enough small pots for it to have no effect to your stack.

I get the feeling that ( i may be wrong) you are very tight... this may very well be why you are seeing lots of 'aggressive players' playing against you.. this imay not be the case, and they may just be playing standard tournament poker, which to you seems fearless, and agressive... In the later stages of tournaments, you want to be getting the 'oh i will wait for a semi decent hand, and then call' out of your head... unless you are trapping a raiser with AA/KK, then just play back at the original raiser... do not CALL a rasie with AJ offsuit.... 3-BET (raise) him back... there is no point just calling a semi good hand in the hope to hit your 1 in 3 pair on the flop...

You say that 'you are sure people are bluffing you and raising you off large pots', I do hope you do not mean simple raises preflop, as 80% of decent players will raise with 45 offsuit the same amount of times as they will raise with AK suited... I shall ckarify as i have heard many people say a similar thing...... You CANNOT BLUFF PREFLOP... it does not happen.. unless you are in a killer 4 way pot with raises and reraises, and you make some sort of cold 4 bet with T2 offsuit to push people out of the pot...

A raise preflop cannot be called a bluff, pure and simple, a positional raise with 72 is not a bluff, it is merely a way of gaining position in the pot for later streets... 3 betting 78 in position is NOT A A BLUFF, it is once again gaining position and representing a hand that it is not... Do not think that if someone raises preflop, they either have to have AK/AQ/AA/KK/QQ and if not then they are 'bluffing you off a pot' that is not the case...

If they seem to 'bluff' you off large pots post flop, then maybe you should think about reraising preflop to get a smuch money in the pot as possible, so that the chances of them bluffing you post flop are a lot slimmer..?

Vasically to sum up, i think it is essential for you to play more aggressively like you say, this does not mean 'play more hands passively' it means take control, and raise more hands, 3 bet more hands, re-shove all in more often,,,, don't simply call people's raises etc...

hope this helps :-)

James666.. Just re-read what you wrote and what you are saying is in my experience true for the games at higher buy-ins.. ..The standards of players at my normal levels most definately do not raise or play pre-flop the way the more experienced players like yourselves play.....

Try playing a $5 or $10 mtt and see how far you get playing like that and I will bet you that you are donked / sucked out by a call that just doesn,t happen in your normal standard..

Your response will help me as and when I play higher stakes most definately as it makes sense completely and Callmebabe,s view is also extremely helpful...thankyou both.. Happy
