Problem with updates. - network issues

Hey there,..
Just moved to uni.. and to cut a long story short.

Spoke to university IT, asked them to unblock the ports listed on PKR.com. They say ok.

I start up the client,.. and nothing happens... nothing at all shows, until literally about 10 mins later it says " could not connect ".

I get really angry and try everything.. eventually when I go home and try it works fine. I then go back to uni and connect using my phone as a modem.. it works fine.
Once i've connected using my phone.. I then switched the connection back to the main uni internat and it carries on running fine.

Soooo...
I can run PKR on my network, only the update servers ( what it does at the start ) i evidently can't connect to.
Is there a way to skip the update check or a way to make it work?
It's irritating having to use my phone to update PKR and costs a fortune!

Sounds like your Uni are blocking access the to the companies that host/provide delivery of PKR's updates. (I see the client accessing an IP address that belongs to Limelight Networks at startup.)

The best I can suggest is either get yourself a mobile broadband dongle/package or, as previously recommended by Chiv, use a tunnelling service from Art of Ping (http://www.artofping.com) to bypass your Uni's firewall.
