Decided to check out my local Big Slick poker club on Monday.
£40 freezeout, 52 runners, 9 in the money ranging from £730 for the winner to £50 for 9th.
10k starting stack, blinds started at 25/50, 25 minute levels for the 1st 2 levels then 20 mins from that point on. Only thing is, I got to the final table at about 2am and by this point, the blinds were at 3000 / 6000 and the average stack was about 60k so it was a complete crap shoot by then. Anyway, here's how my tournament went...
Dont play a hand for about the 1st hour. A guy 2 to my left is very active, raising most pots and always betting big on each street. He's picked up some nice pots and is chip leader after a couple of hours.
First hand I play, is AQ about an hour in. Raise it up to 3xBB and get 2 callers. Flop is KQK, action goes check check check. Turn is a 4, 1st guy bets half the pot, gets a caller and I decide to call for pot control. River is a blank, first guy then bets half pot again, other guy folds and I call, pretty sure I'm ahead and he mucks
Next hand I play, UTG raises to 2400 (blinds about 400/800 from memory) and I look at AKs in the cutoff. I 3bet to 7800 and he folds, showing his AK and asking if I had the QQ, KK or AA – I don’t tell him and just smile
Couple of hands later I raise on the button with 48o. Aggressive guy calls from the big blind. Flop comes AJx with 2 spades, I bet 2 3rds and he calls. Turn is a blank so I bet 2 3rds pot again and he folds, I show the bluff and he hates it
I then pick up A5s blind vs blind so I make it 2.5x and he calls. Flop is 10 J x, I check, he bets half pot and I decide to call thinking I'm still ahead a lot of the time. Turn is another J, I check and he checks behind. River is a 2, I check and he puts in a 2 3rds pot bet. He slammed his chips in which made me think back to reading about tells (sad I know!) and I knew as soon as he did this, he had nothing. I put in a big raise and take it down.
Very next hand, 2 limpers and it comes round to me with 46s. I am going to fold but guy to act after me also limps (same guy in the blind from last hand), before its his turn so I decide to limp too, join the party. SB folds, BB checks and we see a flop of 457. Action goes check check, I check and guy next to me bets about 2 3rds pot. First 2 players fold and I think for a while - do I raise or call? I decide to just call here and see what the turn brings. Turn is an ace so I check and he checks behind. River is a 3 - jackpot! I bet half the pot, hoping for a call from Ax 7x etc but he pushes all in! I insta call and he looks at me in disgust when I show my rivered straight, beating his rivered straight with his pocket 2s.
I then pick up KJ on the button. Raise it to 3X and aggressive player in the BB 3bets all in. He’s down to about 16k chips by this point and I easily have him covered and it doesn’t cost me much more to call which I do. He has 99, I spike the K and he is out.
I'm now big chip leader and happy with my play. Tables then go down to 2 tables and we have some new players. 1st hand after the change, I am in the SB with A10, blinds at 1000/2000 IIRC. Action folds to me so I raise 3x and the BB insta shoves for 28k. I look at him and he certainly doesnt look like he wants a call. I tank for a good while then call and he says good call and flips over 82o. Flop brings an 8 and I'm down to about 34k. I then build this back up to about 70k then a sick hand happens
Guy to my right was down to 2k (1x BB) but built it back up to about 22k. He raised from the button and I see JJ so I put him all in and he snaps with AA! Flop brings the J, turn the A! Rigged I tell you!
Bubble bursts and I'm on the final table with about 40k but it's is shove or fold poker. I shove pocket 3s in the SB and called by pocket 7s in the BB. He is short stack though and I'm down to 25k ish. Shove a few hands and pick up blinds and get back to about 50k then I pick up 8s, shove and called by KK. GG WP etc
Cost me £40 to enter, £10 on beers, £5 on taxi and I won £70. £15 profit and I got home at 2:30am and had to be up for work at 6:45am.
That's it from me for live poker, definitely in the evenings anyway!! Too many hours for not a lot of reward and a complete crap shoot at the end!
