Hi, My name is Ponah and I am an alcoho....Oh, Hang on, wrong forum...

I have been playing Poker since July this year and I love it... please give me some advice. I can seem to get through the first 6 levels of a Tournament ok, with a healthy stack, sometimes. I tend to tighten up, with the mindset that I have got this far and I dont want to blow it now. I beleive I tighten up too much and get blinded away to nothing.

Is there a style of play is adopted by the higher level players to try to maintain a healthy stack, without risking it all on careless raises and all-ins?

I have read a few books and I love this forum and use alot of the info provided in my games, some with success, some without. I understand that it will take thousands of years to master this game, but if there is a strategy which is used by you guys, to help maintain a stack in the latter levels of Tourneys, I would be forever in your debt.

Thanks All

Take your time in the start and dont trow all your chips after some stupid hand/s and when you do have a hand, play it but dont overplay it, if you know what i mean.
And just play alot of tournys, that will alsaw help you, maybe start with the "cheap" tournys, so you can go all in or raise, when ever U feel its right, you might win now and then wink

Thanx Heaps Fortet...I must admit I do chase hands early in an attempt to build a stack so I can sit on it. I really must work on my patience levels.

I am not sure I know the difference between playing and overplaying a hand, but I will look into it....This is my first post, so thanks for the quick and useful feedback, much appreciated...P

I play the opposite. Tight early, then loosen up. The reason for this is that people tend to be more willing to fold later on.

Other than that, just think about fold equity and the difference between a raising hand, a calling and a re-raising hand. You see a lot less calling hands when you're playing 15-20 BBs deep than when you're 100 BBs deep. Raising KJ off from the cutoff will probably get two calls in level 1, but either folds or 3-bets in level 10.

Good luck, and read the "Raise your game" section for a lot of good insight.

If you have a look through disco's thread here then you should get a few good pointers.
