Event 39 $1,500 No Limit Hold'em - 20 June 2009
That all changed when I got to the table. Within the first two levels an English guy who I've seen before was all-in twice, once with KK against AA (he catches a king on the flop to double up), and the second time with AK against AA (he flops TJQ for the nut straight). Up until this point I was holding my own, stealing a few pots and blinds here and there without picking up any hands.
Level 4, blinds 100/200, stack 5,600
The player UTG limps, as does seat 3. The English player to my left makes it 800 to play, which I thought he might do as he'd been raising a lot of pots and was now well up to 13,000 after his very lucky suck outs. I look down at my cards and see the magic letters AA! I raise it up to 1,800 hoping he will call, both limpers fold and he makes the call. I can't put him on a hand yet as he's played any two cards from what I've seen of him.
Flop 3 8 J all hearts. Damn I hate this flop as I hold two black Aces. He checks to me, and I bet out 2,100 into a 4,000 or so pot, showing that I'm committed to this pot. He makes the call, the turn rolls off the Queen of Hearts and he pushes a stack of red chips over the line, putting me all-in if I make the call. Grrrrr...."$&!*&@)!&". I fold, leaving me just over 1,500 chips.
The next hand I get my chance to double up, with AsQs. Again the guy to my left makes it 700 to play, and - sure that I've got the best hand here - I move my stack over the line, hoping he will call. He does, and turns over TT - not the hand I wanted to see, but I'm in with a fighting chance. Unfortunately, his hand holds up and Event 39 is another disappointment for me.
As I leave the table I ask him what he had in the previous hand. He tells me Kh T. My mistake maybe was not re-raising enough pre-flop on the AA hand, but as I said at the time of play, I didn't think he had much and didn't want to lose his action.
Well Event 51 is next for me and I'm hoping that I get that little bit of luck that every player needs to run deep in these events. Until then, all the best!
