The ring game regular talks downswings, EV, mistakes and game selection

In addition to the Kings of Cash Weekly Report also published today, we pick the brains of Tom 'giveyourcash' Demaine, one of PKR's hardest working cash game regulars...

You put in more hours each week at the felt than most guys - how has the week or so gone?

Well, here's a graph of my all-in expected value vs performance over the first days of November. Everything going well, things coming along nicely, then 'OH GOD NO! ARRRRRGGGH!! WHYYY?!?!'...

EV vs All-in performance - giveyourcash

I am just now beginning to climb slowly and stutteringly out of the worst downswing of my poker career to date. They say at some point you will run worse than you ever thought possible, and it's true. A good deal of the time poker is an awesome job to have - no boss, no commute, you set your own hours, you can work in your pants - but when things are going bad it can be the worst job in the world. Where else can you say "I went to work for six hours today, I tried my hardest and did my very best job ... oh and I lost $4K." No other job makes you pay them if your work isn't up to scratch (or Jabba would be destitute :))

I'm glad to say that things aren't so bad, I'm still down considerably from my highest point and as yet not up for the month, but thanks to a +$8K day on 11 November, the outlook isn't as bleak as it may have been.

Biggest mistake?

My biggest mistake was definitely my attitude. It's very difficult to keep a level head when you're experiencing the negative side of variance and I think I let it get to me too much. Probability doesn't care and isn't personal. Too many times I had a 'why me?' mindset and I'm sure it cost me money. I should never have started feeling sorry for myself, I should have said 'this is the situation, how am I going to maximise my UEV given these unchangeable conditions?'

Most memorable pot?

This is the biggest hand I lost in the last couple of weeks, and I think it qualifies as worst beat and most memorable. It may well qualify as biggest mistake too, I'm not at all happy with the way I played it.

How do you feel looking back at your most recent sessions?

I'm now in a better place than I was and I think that I've grown because of this experience. Poker isn't rigged, the world isn't out to get you, feeling sorry for yourself and ranting and trying to get people to see how badly you're running won't do anything to improve your bottom line. In fact it will almost certainly make things worse. With the next big downswing I hit, I hope I'll be more able to put that thinking into practice.

What's your outlook each week/day, in terms of goals?

I don't set daily or weekly cash game goals. My goal is to play the best poker I can and to get into the biggest +UEV situations I can.

What is your game selection like on PKR? Is there an opponent you won't play, and under what circumstances?

I think that I'm one of the most rigorous game selectors on the site. I think a lot of my edge comes from picking better games and better seats than the other regs, but I'm not going to give away too much about that. Is there an opponent I won't play? Of course. There 50 or 60 opponents I won't play if the circumstances aren't correct. Some play poker for the ego boost. Some play to dominate and beat all comers. I play for the money, end of. Give me a table with five deep-stacked huge donators and an empty seat, and you can keep your grudge matches and your HU challenges.
