Playing poker with your partner

Dave Woods learns the true meaning of having a better half

By Dave WoodsDave Woods on Tuesday 13 Oct 2009 17:15

Introducing the love of your life to the beautiful game may seem like a great idea, but think hard before you buy them a chipset for their birthday

My girlfriend plays poker. For those of you out there in a single poker relationship, this isn’t a boast. In fact it’s a cautionary tale that sums up perfectly why you should be very, very, careful what you wish for. Let me explain…

I remember a story Todd Brunson told a few years back. He said he managed to get his wife playing poker and then had to put up with coming back from a losing session in the Big Game, down say half a million dollars, and listening to her bad beat stories from the $0.05/$0.10 tables. I’ve never had the money or the skills to play in the Big Game, but I do play poker and I do moan more than I should about my bad beats. Now I’m getting it back. Every night as I walk in the house.

My girlfriend and I started playing each other heads-up in order to get her game up to speed. The problem was, she quickly started beating me, and bluffing me, and putting me on life-tilt. The last time we did this was on holiday in the Maldives, which was when I discovered you can be sitting yards from a turquoise ocean, in blazing sunshine, with the love of your life and a cold beer in hand, and still feel like you’re the unluckiest man in the world…

Feeling the burn

Poker can teach you the meaning of 'the better half'

To top it off, she’s started winning more than me online. Regularly. Now that doesn’t hurt me on a chauvinistic level, but it does deep down in the spirit of competition. I’ve been playing longer than her, read more strategy then her, watched more videos than her, and now I’m having to put up with her coming to bed at 4am, waking me up and telling me how much money she’s won. I wouldn’t mind, but at the moment everything she wins is getting ploughed into her bankroll – something I told her she should have – which means I don’t even get to reap any of the rewards.

So, if you’re reading this and you’re still desperately trying to get your partner into the game, stop, take ten seconds to think it through, and maybe, just maybe, back away from the topic and never mention it again. You don’t know how lucky you are.

I have a wife who wonders everyday , How i can play for so long and enjoy it. Well I do, have met some nice people , but if she played she might realize that it was not so bad........and if she did beat me soo what I think ur ego is at work here, I woudl embrace her if she started to play and win, then I would watch her and u want a piece of the action cuz she won............Wow get a live , ur not careful thats not all u will lose ......U will lose ur partner!!

lol My GF wont even listen to the basics. Can be a problem when asking her to take over if I have to take a break during a game. 'It made a ticking noise then it said you are away' is the closest she has got
to playing. Probably a good thing- 2 tilt monkeys in one house cant be healthy lllooolll

i love this post as both me and my partner play and my mum and dad play. ive been around multiple poker personalities in the same house for a while, and i find having someone to talk through bad beats and hand situations as they happen greatly improves your game. the only downside? fighting for the computer. but i normally win at that too so im all good :)

My boyfriend always complains about how much we (ME) play...this is exactly our story. However, I must say, I am very happy with my winnings! :)

Something so sexy about women playing poker, tried to get my girlfriend to play, but she's a huge fish and has no interest, maybe thats a good thing.
Well if your woman is running so hot aleast your credit card won't be getting much action from her shopping and poker wise!

Dunno why but the title sounds quite "couples counselling" :)

Dave, if my missus beats me out of some cash, you'll be hearin from me...
