Poker is Life!

Why do people cast their eyes skyward and sigh when you try to explain the beauty and significance of the world's most fascinating game? Poker is so much more than cards, it's about people, it's the classroom in which we learn, it's the stage on which we perform and it's the field in which we joust.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who uses poker analogies for everything from relationships and philosophy, to war and politics.

Poker represents the perfect microcosm of our existence: the random element; the presence of unpredictable human responses; the endless tug of war; lines being drawn in the sand; human beings manipulating each other and the situations they find themselves in. Poker is life!

Professor Charles Nesson, founder of the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society (GPSTS) came out with a beautiful little quote that’s sure to make you sound clever and convincing if you can remember it:

“Teaching truth leads to and through teaching poker as a skill in seeing and understanding another's point of view. It's for anyone who is eager to learn how the rhetorical world works and connect it to the physical"

Empathy is everything and persuasion and manipulation are how we get what we want from the world we live in. The skills you acquire on the poker table can be almost universally applied to real world practicality. Learning to understand what another person is thinking is a skill that extends well beyond a simple ‘game of cards’. Developing a check-list for decision making and learning to account for an endless stream of variables and assess risk are all essential training for good judgment.

It's little wonder that the best poker players are the brightest people. Poker allows you to explore your own boundaries and limits in a game of limitless situations: randomness set in the context of predictable human behaviours. What could be more beautiful?

So why am I boring you with this little speech about what makes poker so great? Most of you know this stuff already and you have undoubtedly had the same discussions with your poker playing friends.

Well, it’s time for us to throw off the shackles of negative association and the shady back-room gambler image that has haunted us all for so long. The poker playing population needs to rise to the challenge of educating the doubters and sceptics.

This article is actually a challenge in disguise...

I want anyone reading this to compose a short and convincing paragraph explaining why you love poker and why it is so much more than a game of cards, or a simple outlet for your punting urges. Keep it short and sweet and I will come back to this article on Wednesday to check the comments. I will pick my favourite and the winner will get a ticket to the Daily $17K worth $60.

Be lucky folks!

Messomic91 PKRLIFES lol. dedicasse youpsette hihihi

No life philosophy in my post, I just simply love the game and the people you meet and play with (and against).

I love the fact there's no barriers to Age, Sex, Religion, Nationality or political persuasion, anyone can play.

At times I've been yelled at and abused from halfway around the world, got praise for a good hand or a gutsy call as well.

I've played against some really awful players and learned, played against some really awesome players, had my butt kicked, hard, and learned.

Still learning, still enjoying, doesn't matter if it's a $1.00 9 hander or a multi player freeroll.

Bring it on.

BTW, I just love stroopwafels.

In life we are constantly trying to predict the future and make correct decisions but it doesn’t always go to plan; same in poker we are constantly trying to make the best decision in every situation but sometimes people hit there 1 outer against you.

Poker focuses you on making the best educated decision on something with an element of unpredictability. Trying to make the best decisions on as much information as possible in the long run it will work out in life and poker!!!

Short and sweet: Stroopwafels!

Stroop: the cards

Wafels: the players, rooms, tables, fighting, laughing, crying, loving, PKR_crew, community, forums, meetings, drinks, friendships, relationships, weddings, babies.

Without the stroop the wafels would fall apart...

please excuse me if this sounds too up it's on arse!

we enter this world niave and wet around the ears, but we learn and we grow,
supported by friends, stepping on rivals, taught by our experiences and what others know.

from rags to riches, the more you put in, the more you are given,
a few will cheat to get what they desire, there is always a hard way to make an easy living.

we all want to live the dream, the glory, the riches and the stardom,
but all too often the best laid plans are to be shattered by wreckless abandon.

mock, praise, judge and admire but never underestimate,
a melting pot of behaviour and chance make it frustrating, exciting, horrific and great.

losing despite a positive expectation, we can overcome inconceivable odds,
money means nothing and everything at once, place your faith in the science just don't anger the gods!

this is life. this is poker.

I will own up and confess that I started playing for real money on PKR because I wanted a new outfit for my avatar (no-one else will admit this) :-) But from my inglorious beginnings I quickly realised that there was more to this game than met the eye. More than anything else I love the fact that the game requires intelligence and confidence in large quantities. If there ever was a game that was designed to expose your weaknesses and fears, then this is it. I used to work in the City in the finance markets (another big gambling environment of course) and I loved the characters I found there. Some found them brash and arrogant whereas I admired them for being bright and courageous (and hugely entertaining at times). I see the same thing in good poker players. It takes guts and intelligence to play good poker and I have the utmost respect for those that master the game.

Poker has opened my view on many things. First of all. You are not always right, and it is sometimes neccesary to back down from your cause.

Jumping right into things without thinking it through isnt the right approach.

Controlling your tilt, will raise your game. Dont be afraid of knockbacks, take a deep breath and maybe sit out for a while, come back and wait for something good.
.
All good things comes to those who are patient. If you are in a rush so will your chip stack vanish.

Poker sharpens the senses. Just think poker in real life, and you will get the upper hand and control your life.

When my girlfriend found out I played online poker it was a sad day. I was greeted with the typical eye roll, a tut of disgust, and the phrase "oh so you're a crazy gambler?" Between then and now I have won her around to the point where she has her own account on here! I explained to her the beauty of this game, which is that skill overrides luck, contrary to what she previously thought, and i showed her discomonkey's sharkscope to illustrate my point. Making the correct decisions in poker is vital and how we measure success. I believe I made a correct decision in teaching her the way, at least now we have more to talk about!!

I've met some of the most interesting people at poker tables. There's nothing like friendly chatter and laughs with a group of strangers, one moment they're your friends, the next your sworn enemies. Dealing with taking the chips from someone just moments ago you were sharing details of your loved ones with, all the while keeping your cool and using the maths you learnt at school to calculate pot odds ... the maths you thought you'd never use...

poker is so unpredictable that your always guessing always stretching your mind, increasing your knowledge, sharpening your skills, some do crosswords whilst others play sudko me, i like to thin i can one outer someone in a game of poker i learn by mistakes in life and in poker ..yet in life im still thinking about poker, its a combination game skill and luck pretty much like life, take the rough with the smooth and you will always come up with the nuts in the end. poker ftw

What is the yard stick by which we measure success? In a game where chance cannot be ignored whether across a hand, a session or a year, what does ROI really mean? But through this struggle those things that we learn about ourselves give us a measure by which all things can be gauged.

I limp in with caution last to act,i carnt believe my eyes as i look at the best hand ive ever seen, luck does not favour the brave this time as the chips are boldly shoved towards the middle,my eyes grow wide and my stack grows high, some fight to the death, while others fade into a painting of still life.I slay the last few in the dark so thay will never forget who is king of this game,a game without end.Its quite now but for sound of shuffling cards ready for the next brave knights to take Arthers seat at this ghostly round table!
