FilipStan 'Steps up'

After winning last week's vote, how would our small staker fair against the big boys?

So close but yet so far...

Yet again our small stakers have held their own and not been embarrassed at the higher level. This time FilipStan came so close to becoming our fifth person to cash, but it wasn't to be and he busted out on the bubble.

FilipStan
Based: Macedonia.
Joined PKR: May 2009
Biggest PKR win: $11.34 in $50 freeroll

Stepping Up results
$18 buy-in $10,000 GTD PKR Open (101/733)
$5 buy-in $1,000 GTD Deep Stack (85/378)
$10 buy-in $1,000 GTD 6 seater (42/140)

What was your overall approach to these tournaments?
In the Deep Stack I played tight early on and then tried to become more aggressive when the blinds moved up. Unfortunately this didn’t quite work out for me and I busted out with A-A. If I had won that hand I would have been fifth in the tournament at that point.

The other two tournaments I played a bit too tight and in the PKR Open I was on the bubble.

What do you think is your greatest weakness?
My biggest weakness is that sometimes I don’t listen to my instinct I make a mistakes that costs me a lot later.

What advice can you give to players who are just starting out on their real money tournament journey?
My people start playing, start learning, never give up and try, try, try, until you accomplish your goal and make some serious money. Get Rich or Die Playing. :-)

Also I want to say to all PKR community members that if you lose with bad beat, it’s not the site's fault - it’s just bad luck.

How long have you been playing poker?
I started playing poker about 7-8 months ago on facebook (there I learned the rules). After that I discovered PKR and played freerolls and after few tournaments I finished first place of 3,000 players in a $50 freeroll to win $11.33.

What did your experience teach you, and how (if at all) has your MTT strategy changed?
My experience was great. It was a pleasure to play better tournaments and my MTT strategy has definitely improved. I’ve learned that you must play aggressive, brave poker, and always play to win. And because I was always near the money I know that I must improve my bubble play.

Which tournament did you enjoy the most, and why?
I enjoyed the $1,000 GTD Deep Stack the most because you have the time and chips to play some poker - and for tight player like me that’s great.

How did you find the difference in class compared to the lower buy-in tourneys?
The difference is big. These players were aggressive, good bluffers and I certainly learnt a few new things from them.

Will you be playing any of the tourneys again?
I will play $1,000 GTD Deep Stack again because it suits my game and I believe that you should always stick to what you are good at.

What was the most satisfying hand you played over the whole weekend?
My most satisfying hand was early on in the $1,000 GTD six seater. I and two other guys were in the pot and I held Q-10. The flop was 2-Q-10 all hearts, I played it really aggressive - bet 2/3 of the pot and one guy called me. The turn was a 6S and I bet the pot because I knew I had the best hand, but he called again.

The river produced a 2C and the guy raised and although I had invested 40% of my stack I knew he had Q-2 so folded. He then showed Q-2. LOL.
