Hmm, it's a curious one because I would have been sure that this light would come on. Having said that, I haven't dealt with this problem before so if you're sure that this-is-what-it-is then don't rule it out just yet. Generally speaking though, it's not often or at least common for a MAF to need replaced on any car during it's lifetime... but these Volvos man, you know, they aren't any car; They run a long time yar.

First of all, have you got the Engine Management light on the dash? That's the orange triange light with some sort of green upside down y (Greek alphabet - Don't ask). It's called the 'lambda sond' or something.
Anyway, the point is that the 850s are pretty good at telling you about this type of failure. So in other words, if the MAF sensor is broken this light will come on and stay on.
